Tuesday Study
TUESDAY STUDY: The Christian Classics: Studies in Christian Literature and Theology
(Session Room 016/017, 11:00 am), Teacher: Dr. Bob Fuller
Fall 2012: The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a' Kempis (1380-1471).
"Religion's second-best seller." -- Walter Elwell, describing The Imitation of Christ as second only to the Bible in sales and popularity among religious readers.
Through its realistic delineation of the complexities of human existence, and in its soul-building optimism about the benefits of aspiring to a Christ-shaped life, The Imitation of Christ clearly deserves the accolade of "Spiritual Classic." Although they were written early in the fifteenth century, the number of short meditations that comprise this work remain strikingly fresh and relevant for modern readers.
The Christian Classics group was formed in the Spring of 2006 to encourage enthusiasm and discussion for the best in historical Christian literature. Using contemporary translations when available, this study group takes an unhurried/in-depth approach to works that have informed, transformed, and reformed Christian faith. In the past the group has read John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion , John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress and C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, and The Cost of Discipleship by German martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Books are available for purchase from the Church office.
